Letter Sequences and Letter Codes
Turn each letter into its position in the alphabet, and a letter sequence or code becomes a number problem.
Why this matters
No past IMAT paper has asked a letter sequence yet. They test the same skill as number sequences and are standard in reasoning tests, so the method is worth the few minutes it takes to learn.
Concept 1 of 2: Alphabet positions and letter sequences
Definition
- Position: A = 1, B = 2, …, Z = 26. Anchors: E 5, J 10, O 15, T 20, Y 25.
- Position from the end: Z is 1st from the end, A is 26th. Position from the end = 27 minus the position.
- Wrap-around: after Z comes A again. Subtract 26 from any position above 26.
- Pairs of letters may move in opposite directions, for example AZ, BY, CX, where each pair adds to 27.
| Letters | Positions | Positions from the end |
|---|---|---|
| A B C D E | 1 2 3 4 5 | 26 25 24 23 22 |
| F G H I J | 6 7 8 9 10 | 21 20 19 18 17 |
| K L M N O | 11 12 13 14 15 | 16 15 14 13 12 |
| P Q R S T | 16 17 18 19 20 | 11 10 9 8 7 |
| U V W X Y | 21 22 23 24 25 | 6 5 4 3 2 |
| Z | 26 | 1 |

Concept 2 of 2: Letter codes: shifts and reversed alphabets
Definition
- A shift code moves every letter places forward (or back), wrapping from Z to A.
- Find from one letter pair, then check it on every letter of the example: codes sometimes use different shifts for different positions.
- A reversed alphabet code swaps A with Z, B with Y, and so on: each pair of positions adds to 27.
- To decode, apply the shift in the opposite direction.
Shift code
- the shift; negative means move backwards
